ENG NZ 3RD TEST DAY 2– J Bairstow, and J Overton leads England’s fightback after T Boult’s new ball spell. England still trailing by 65 runs.
Day 2 1st Session (ENG NZ 3RD TEST)
New Zealand started the day with 225 for 5 with both the familiar faces for NZ in the series, T Blundell and D Mitchell at the crease. The former reaches his half century with a boundary in the very first over. He reaches the milestone of 111 balls.
D Mitchell had been given a lifeline as B Foakes put down a catch in the second over of the day. M Potts finally gets the wicket of T Blundell in the 96th over and broke a 120 runs stand between the pair for the 6th wicket. T Blundell made 55 off 122 balls with 7 fours.
M Bracewell spends some time at the crease but didn’t last long at the crease. S Broad got him as his third wicket of the inning. The batter made 13 off 46 balls with two fours. (ENG NZ 3RD TEST)
T Southee came at the crease and played some shots. D Mitchell continues his rich run of form in the series. He completed the 3rd century of the series in 112th over in 213 balls. He reaches the milestone with a six to J Leach with a lofted drive.
The pair added a valuable 60 runs for the 8th wicket. The partnership was broken by J Leach at the stroke of lunch when he got D Mitchell. The batter made 109 off 228 balls with 9 fours and 3 sixes.
England wraps up the New Zealand inning after the start of the 2nd session. J Leach took two wickets in the same over in T Southee, who played a valuable cameo of 33 off 29 balls with 5 fours and a six, and N Wagner. (ENG NZ 3RD TEST)
NZ made 329 in the first inning. J Leach took a five-fer. S Broad also took 3 wickets.
T Boult was on the money when ENG came out to bat. He took a wicket in the very first over in A Lees. The left arm pacer bowled an outstanding spell of swing and seam bowling and T Southee partnered him very well. ENG were 23 for 4 in the first eight overs. T Boult took 3 wickets while T Southee managed to take a big wicket of J Root.
J Bairstow and B Stokes played some shots when the pair is at the crease. But B Stokes small inning of 18 off 13 balls was cut short by N Wagner, who got him in his very first over. He even took B Foakes in the same over and ENG were in big trouble. (ENG NZ 3RD TEST)
Then comes J Bairstow and the debutant J Overton. The former continues where he left off in the last test and the latter also complimented him well on his debut. ENG were 91 for 6 after the 2nd session.
Both the batters took on the NZ bowlers and scored runs very quickly. J Bairstow completes his half century in just 51 balls with two back to back boundaries. The pair completes the century stand in the 32nd over. (ENG NZ 3RD TEST)
The pair didn’t even stop there as they reaches the 200 run stands in a very quick time. The fight back from the two keeps the game in the balance after the end of Day 2.
